# Define custom fields for assets

> Add custom fields to your Firmhouse assets to track damages, purchase dates, serial numbers, and any other attributes relevant to your stock.

You can define extra fields for your assets. This allows you to store extra information about the asset that you want to keep track of. You could for example keep track of visible damages per asset, or store when the asset was purchased and added to your stock.

Asset fields can be managed by **Project managers** only. Regular **Team members** can change the values of the fields per individual asset.

When creating an asset field you can give it a name, description, and a type. Here's what each of these fields do:

**Name** - Will appear when you create or edit an asset. This should be a short form name to quickly identify what this asset field is about.

**Description** - Will appear below the name when creating or editing an asset. This can contain a bit longer explanation on how the asset field should be used by you and your team.

**Type** - The type of the asset dictates what kind of values you can enter into the field when creating or editing an asset. Currently supported types are **single line**, **multi line**, or **date**.

## Adding an asset field

### Steps

1. In your Firmhouse project, go to **Settings > Asset fields** in the sidebar.
2. Click **New asset field** in the top right.
3. Give your field a name, description and a type.
4. Click **Create field**.

This field now becomes available when editing assets.

## Editing an asset field

### Steps

1. In your Firmhouse project, go to **Settings > Asset fields** in the sidebar.
2. Click **Edit** for the field you want to edit.
3. Update the field's name or type.
4. Click **Save changes**.

The new name will now appear on asset detail pages and on the asset edit pages.

## Deleting an asset field

An asset field can be permanently deleted when you have no use for it anymore.

**Warning:** Deleting a field will also *permanently* delete all stored values for that field on individual assets. Make sure you don't accidentally delete an important asset field with important information.

### Steps

1. In your Firmhouse project, go to **Settings > Asset fields** in the sidebar.
2. Click **Asset fields** under the **Assets** heading in the sidebar.
3. Click **Delete** for the field you want to delete.
4. Confirm the field deletion.

The deleted field will not appear on asset detail pages and on the asset edit pages anymore.
