Local Payment Methods are useful when you sell subscriptions in markets where customers prefer payment methods such as iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact, Pay by Bank, or SEPA Direct Debit instead of credit cards or PayPal. Use this guide if you run a Shopify subscription store in Europe and want customers to start subscriptions with familiar local payment methods while Firmhouse handles the recurring payment flow afterward.

What customers can do

With local payment methods enabled, customers can:
  • Start a subscription through Shopify Checkout with a local payment method such as iDEAL | Wero or Bancontact.
  • Complete the first payment using the method they recognize from regular ecommerce purchases.
  • Continue their subscription through recurring SEPA Direct Debit payments where supported.

How to set it up

Start with Quick install on Shopify to install Firmhouse, sync subscription products, create subscription plans, add subscription options to your product pages, and verify the standard checkout flow. After the regular Shopify subscription setup works, continue with Set up iDEAL | Wero, SEPA and other local payment methods. That guide walks through the payment-provider setup, Shopify checkout touchpoints, Firmhouse payment settings, and the SEPA Direct Debit test flow. For background on which payment methods work in each setup, see Supported Payment Methods. For more detail on SEPA recurring charges after checkout, see Recurring Charges (SEPA).
