Recurring rental payments and instalment charges can create Shopify orders without a new shipment. For example, a customer may already have received their rental item or be paying the remaining instalments for a delivered product. To skip Shopify’s order confirmation email for these charges, mark the Shopify billing products as not requiring shipping, then make the email subject conditional on whether the order requires shipping.

Configure the billing products

In Shopify, open each product used only for rental or instalment charges without a shipment. Turn off the product’s Requires shipping setting (requires_shipping: false) and save. Keep shipping enabled for products that are physically shipped. For rental setups, see Create a virtual billing product in Shopify for the product setup steps.

Update the Shopify order confirmation

  1. In Shopify, go to Settings > Notifications > Customer notifications > Order confirmation, then select Edit code.
  2. Replace the Email subject with:

For an order that requires no shipping, this leaves the subject empty so Shopify skips the confirmation email. Orders that require shipping keep the subject Order [order number] confirmed.
This condition skips confirmation emails for all orders that require no shipping, including digital products and services. If those purchases should still receive an order confirmation, customize the condition for your store so it excludes only the rental or instalment charges you want to skip.
An order containing any product that requires shipping still receives the confirmation. Check both a shipping order and an order containing only rental or instalment charges after making the change. If you sell digital products or services, also check that they receive the intended confirmation.
